About Me I'm a professional stage hypnotist & close up magician and tour doing promo work for Sandals & Beaches Resorts. My clients also include Siemans, Oprah Winfrey, and even an appearance on Mack's show on 103.5!
I believe in... Truth, Justice and the American Way, but not the way that things are being run in Washington these days! I believe that NICE matters and that magic exists - don't believe me? Invite me to your next party and I'll prove it to you!
I'm all about... Entertaining. Whether at corporate events, post proms and grad parties or at charity events like the Relay For Life event in Grayslake, where I volunteer my show every year to help fight cancer.
I live for... Life. I'm a cancer survivor myself. I live for my wife, our home, to bring some wonder into other people's lives and to maybe bring some fun into a world that's WAY too grim these days.
Music Everything from Beyonce and Red Hot Chili Pepers to Benny Goodman and everything in-between. My tastes are the most eclectic you will probably ever find. I might be listening to Chopin one minute and to Nine Inch Nails the next.
Movies Action adventure, science fiction, comedy and oldies. Film noir, old movie serials an MST3K. Gotta love the Bots! Kung fu movies and Samurai cinema.
TV Daily Show, the Colbert Report, CNN Headline News, Heroes, Forensic Files, Dr. Who, Asia Today, Cold Case Files, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Hex, Twilight Zone and sometimes Situation Room.
Books I read voraciously in my fields of hypnosis and sleight of hand magic, so anything there. Science fiction, fantasy, especially humorously written stuff. History.
Likes Intelligent people with a sense of humor. Japanese and Chinese food. GOOD coffee. Open minded people. Puns and wordplay.
Dislikes Close minded people, bigotry, people who want to censor free speech and anyone who thinks that just because someone isn't like them that that person is somehow "sinful." Getting caught in the rain.
Virtues Sense of humor. I defend those who are attacked unjustly (and have taken lumps for it). Non-smoker, non-drug user, marginal (very) drinker. Good entertainer.
Heroes My Dad, who fought leukemia longer than the doctors thought possible. Chief Master Sgt. John Gebhardt (Google him - THAT's a Hero!) Roger Young, winner of the Medal of Honor. Wong fei-Hung, one of the Ten Young Tigers of Shangtung and associate of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen who helped overthrow the Last Emperor of China. Danny Kaye, not only for his incredible humor, but for his work with UNICEF, later on, as well as for his work for human rights. The character Lou Bookman, from the Twilight Zone episode "One For the Angels," whom I can relate to, very closely. If you haven't seen the episode, do so - it really comes close to my definition of what a hero does. Gordon R. Dickson, author, who fought valiantly against such crippling allergies that he was a virtual prisoner in his home, yet he still wrote and enjoyed life.

I have GOT to have the coolest Job - EVER!

Wednesday, September 5, 2007, 04:09 PM CST [General]

Drex will disagree, I know, but how cool is it to tour the world, hypnotizing hot women, cool guys and powerful people of all ages and to get PAID to do it?

How cool is it to get PAID to travel to places like St. Lucia, Turks & Caicos (look it up, it's a fantastic island!), Puerto Rico and Jamaica (ya, mon!) and perform shows where people literally drop over seemingly out cold at a touch and who then get to discover just how creative and funny they really are - without being embarrassed by it?

How cool is it to get PAID to do magic for Oprah at her private New Year's party, or for the pre-game shows for the Bulls & Blackhawks or as the strolling sorcerer at Medieval Times?  Or even to Hypnotize a supermodel like Carol Alt or to do a radio promotion stunt on the air for the Woody Allen movie "The Curse of the Jade Scorpion?"

That's how cool my job is!

And, to be honest, I'm right here in the Chi and always looking for new people to entrance and amaze!

    How cool is my job?

A Nice Way to Start The Day

Wednesday, July 18, 2007, 02:26 PM CST [General]

When I got up this morning, I stumbled into my office, downstairs, knowing that it was not going to be a typical day.  My usual morning routine had been messed up by some personal stuff that I had to take care of before hauling myself up to a campground in Wisconsin this evening for a hypnoshs show booking that I am doing tonight.

As I sat there, prepping for my meeting, my phone rang - at 8AM, no less.  With a call from the Denver area.

"Hello, you have reached the offices of Lee Darrow Enterprises," I said, "how may I help you.

The voice on the other end asked if I was Lee Darrow.  Being cautious (we've had some odd drama around here, lately, strange phone calls and such), so I asked who it was.  "This is Janet Macy's brother, Robert.  I'm calling about the entry on Mr. Darrow's Livejournal page.  The family and I wanted to thank him for his kind words about my sister."

    I was flabbergasted.

Janet Macy was a dear friend and colleague in the hypnosis profession.  We'd known each other for about ten years, via telephone and internet and had met only about three times in real life, she lived in California you see and I live here in the Windy City, at the National Guild of Hypnotists conventions in New Hampshire and, most recently, just outside of Boston.

We'd been part of several on-line groups, had shared ideas, techniques and confidences about the field and she had even helped me when I had injured my knee during someone else's show at the convention a few years back.

Janet passed away on June 18 after losing her battle with cancer.

It had been a long and hard fight, with all of us pulling for her, but, in the end, the inoperable mass had spread and she passed in her inimitable way - with dignity and grace, as I knew she would.

And I miss her, as do all of us who knew her.

And here was her brother calling me to thank me for a few words, published on a blog that I thought no one read....

Sometimes, you never know how far your words travel, or who they will touch...

I just hope these words reach Janet.

    Somehow, I think they will.

    Sleep well.

The Blog of Lee Darrow, Hypnotist & Magician

Sunday, July 15, 2007, 04:47 PM CST [General]

Hi there!  Welcome to my occasional blog on the Mob.

I'm Lee Darrow, Chicago's favorite stage hypnotist and close up magician.  You may have seen me at  one of the many events I've worked around town over the years - Medieval Times, the Bulls & Blackhawks pre-game festivities, Dennis Rodman's New Year's party or maybe at any of the litrally hundreds of post proms, grad nights,sweet-16's or corporate events I've done, or maybe you heard me on Mack's show not too long ago when I hypnotized some of his posse' on the air!

On the 28th, I'll be doing a FREE  HYPNOSIS SHOW as part of the Grayslake, IL  Relay For Life, Sponsored by the American Cancer Society.  It's a midnight show, for all ages and the event is to honor those who have lost their battle with cancer and to honor those who have survived as well.

I am donating my show, as I have done every year for the past three years, as a way of giving back something.

You see, I am a cancer survivor, though sheer, dumb luck.

So please, join me and the people who will be walking throughout the night at the Grayslake Aquatic Park, 250 Library Lane, Grayslake, IL.  The event starts at 6PM and I'll be going on stage at midnight.

Join me for the trance of a lifetime.

    Literally.

    Lee Darrow, C.H.
